What's On My Needles This Week - 5/22/2024
Last week I created a series of mosaic knit samples, hoping to find one that would make a lovely scarf for the coming Autumn/Winter. I chose the stitch pattern I thought I would - the large honeycomb. I selected two of the new yarns I purchased 1 week before, at JoAnn's, in hopes of creating a beautiful scarf for the coming Winter.
Both yarns are JoAnn Big Twist brand yarns: Carousel in Amethyst and Value (a solid worsted) in Light Purple. Both yarns are soft and snuggly. Perfect for a scarf or anything that will be touching the skin. I was very surprised and impressed by the quality. I hadn't been to a yarn store in years, I'd made a habit of buying online, but I will be going back for more of these yarns in more colors.
I wanted to try a new technique with this scarf; so, I knitted an I-cord to cast onto, making sure that there were enough stitches for the pattern repeat, plus three I-cord selvage stitches on each side. This was my first time, and I think it worked out fairly well.
I also intend to finish this scarf with an I-cord cast-off. I've never done one before, but I want to stretch myself and work on developing new skills this year.
I've gotten pretty far, considering my many doctor visits these past two weeks. On occasion, I take my knitting with me and that has helped me get farther than I would have otherwise. All in all, I am very satisfied with how this scarf is turning out and I'm looking forward to making another one in a different colorway combination.
Hopefully, I have enough yarn to complete a long scarf that can be worn in multiple ways. It might be wise to revisit JoAnn and pick up another roll of the soft purple and (maybe) two of the amethyst too. But I think I'll wait until I finish the first roll of Carousel Amethyst before planning any additional shopping trips.
I already have a HUGE yarn stash and I fear the temptation of adding even more to it before I make a real dent in it.
In the meantime, I will continue working on this soft and lovely scarf and plan my next project(s).
